DIY Paver Table

I love a project that uses old or leftover materials and combines them to make something new and beautiful! Reusing, rejuvenating and creating an item that suits your own aesthetic or style is what upcylcing is all about. The potential is only limited by your imagination. With a bit of creativity, research and trial and error you can create amazing pieces that you’ll be proud of.

We recently made over our backyard courtyard area and laid these stunning large-scale porcelain pavers. We ended up with a few boxes leftover so when I saw this ‘had better days’ outdoor coffee table on Facebook marketplace that had the exact table top dimensions of the paver and was FREE, I knew it was a sign.

How hard can it be to glue a paver on top of a table right? Trust me, it was super easy!

Sure, if your table and pavers or tiles are not the exact size you might need to do some more thinking. If you have small pavers, can you arrange multiple to fit? Can you smash them up and make a mosaic top? I say why not… give it a go!

What You Will Need

·       Table – If you find an old one to makeover that is great! Mine was an outdoor coffee table with a 600mm x 600mm top

·       Leftover paver or tiles – my paver was 600mm x 600mm

·       Sandpaper

·       Wood stain or paint of choice

·       Paintbrush or rag for applying stain

·       Silicone sealer (Sikaflex or similar)

·       Wood for trim border – I used 42mm x 19mm DAR pine

·  Edge banding clamp or tape (to secure border while silicon dries)

STEP 1

Sand your table to remove as much old stain/paint as possible as well as any noticeable marks. Remember the table top will be covered by the paver so you won’t see it, but do your best to even out the surface so you have a clean foundation for your paver or tiles to sit on. Wipe everything down with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, cobwebs etc.

STEP 2

Stain or paint your table. You can use stain or paint leftover from other projects as you will only need a small amount. I used a sample pot of Cabot’s deck and exterior stain in mission brown that we had in the garage.

STEP 3

Now you are ready to add your paver. Apply silicone to the table top and lay paver carefully on top. Press down lightly to bond the table and paver and leave silicone to set.

STEP 4

To add the trim border I used some pieces of DAR pine in 42mm wide x 19mm thick which covered the edge of the paver and table top for a more finished look.

You will need to cut 4 pieces at 45° angles on both ends. The long-point length measurement will be the length of your table edge plus 2x the thickness of your trim. So in my case I cut 4 pieces at long-point 638 mm (600mm + (2x19mm)).

Stain or paint the trim pieces.

STEP 5

Apply the trim pieces with silicone and secure in place with edge band clamps or tape while the silicone dries.

And that’s a wrap! I’m loving the end result of this paver coffee table DIY and think it looks great styled with our outdoor setting. I hope this inspires you to think of creative ways to use leftover materials and give them a new life in your home or garden.
