DIY Hexagon Shelf

DIY Hexagon Shelf

Looking for a beginner-friendly wood working project with a super cute end result? Look no further than a hexagon shelf.

A great way to use leftover wood or offcuts and fill an empty space on your wall. My hexagon shelf is made using the offcuts from my macrame shelf project. You can find the tutorial for that project here.

I styled my shelf with a DIY macrame jute plant hanger. Follow me on Instagram to know when the tutorial is available!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

·       Wood

·       Mitre saw

·       Painter’s tape

·       Wood glue

·       25mm wood screws

·       Wood filler

·       Sand paper

·       Primer/Sealer

·       Paint or stain

·       Wall fixings

STEP 1

Cut 6 pieces of wood at 30° angles on both ends. My pieces measured 200mm in length, 90mm wide and 20mm thick.

STEP 2

Lay the 6 pieces of wood down (long sides facing up) and tape together with two strips of painters tap to form a chain.

STEP 3

Flip the chain of wood over. Apply wood glue in the joins and start to roll up the chain. The pieces will fold into place and form the hexagon. Add some more tape at the final join to hold the hexagon in place while the glue dries.

STEP 4

Using a 1mm bit drill 2 pilot holes on the outer face of the first side 15mm in from each edge and 10mm from the top so that the hole will enter in the middle of the adjacent board. Use a 6mm bit to create space to countersink the top of your screw.

STEP 5

Secure with 25mm wood screws. Repeat on each of the 6 sides.

STEP 6

Fill the gaps in the joins and screws holes with wood filler. Leave to dry as per instructions.

STEP 7

Sand back the wood filler and lightly sand over the hexagon.

STEP 8

Apply a coat of primer/sealer and then paint. You could also use a wood stain instead of paint to keep a natural wood finish.

STEP 9

If you’d like to hand something in your shelf, drill a pilot hole in the underside of top of the hexagon and screw in a hanging hook.

STEP 10

Install your hexagon shelf using appropriate fixings for your wall. I used SureHook picture hangers for plaster walls. I also painted these with a grey chalk spray paint to help them blend in.

You’re now ready to style your hexagon shelf! If you like the look of my macrame plant hanger follow me on Instagram to stay up to date and be first to know when the tutorial goes live.

You can of course style with a regular or faux potted plant, candle, diffuser or your favourite trinkets.
